interview with David Thurber, St. Luke's 2007 summer seminarian:
Q. Tell us about your family background, where you
grew up.
A Pawtucketis an interesting place to grow up. There’s a lot of noise,
people, cars and excitement. But there’s also a lot of flavor,
diversity, kindness and opportunities to reach out to many different
types of people. I believe that this was the perfect city for my
three brothers and myself to live. Our parish was nothing out of

It was a small French Canadian parish in a big church
building. Many times serving mass, I’d glance out and see all the
empty pews. Perhaps it was at that point I began thinking about the
priesthood. I wanted to reach out to all the different people that
made up Pawtucket and lead them back into the church.
Q. What influenced your decision to study for
the priesthood?
A. The pastor of the parish, Fr. Normand
Courtemanche, really influenced my decision to enter the seminary. I
was always amused with his last name, which means “short sleeve”. I
was even more impressed with the simple lifestyle that he lived. You
see, he is the pastor, bookkeeper, secretary and maintenance guy all
rolled into one quiet and compassionate 68 yr. old man. He never
once complained and each day served the parish to the best of his
abilities. With such a pastor, it is no surprised that I was led
into the seminary!
Q. Tell us about your studies in Rome?
A. When it came time for my assignment to study
theology, I was asked where I wanted to go. “New Jersey, Bishop”, was my reply. Bishop McManus nodded his
head and said, “What if we sent you to Rome?” I had barely been
out of Rhode Island and now I was going to live in Europe! This
has been for me an opportunity of a lifetime. I have tried to
travel as much as possible and learn all could about the different
cultures in Europe. Next
year will be my last in Rome. My
only goal is to complete my studies and continue to experience as much
as I possibly can.
Q. What is your first impression of St. Luke's
Parish?
A. That brings me here to St. Luke’s parish. So
far I have been here for two weeks and I’m having a very enriching
time. After a year in the books, it is great to talk to families,
give out communion to the sick and learn the ins and outs of parish
ministry. There couldn’t have been two better priests for me to
learn from. Fr. Bob Hawkins and Fr. Matthew Glover have been
outstanding examples of what is means to be a Catholic Priest. If I
can be half the priest that either one of them are, I’ll be doing all
right.
Q. Is there anything else you would like to
share with the people of St. Luke's?
A. At this point I would like to thank all of you
at St. Luke’s for being unbelievably warm and welcoming. I have
felt at home from the first day I arrived. Words simply cannot
express the gratitude I have for all of you. Hopefully, I will be
able to get to know as many parishioners this summer as possible. If
there is anything you would like to talk to me about, don’t hesitate
to ask. May God bless all of you and lead you closer to Him each
day!

When the American College celebrated the centenary anniversary of its foundation fifty Fr. Collins was present as a young seminarian. "When The American College celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1982, He was present for the festivities as university professor and in 2007, as a retiree he delivered the sesquicentennial magister lecture.

is proud to announce the release of “Rejoice Tonight”, a seven-song
cd of Christmas music recorded by the St. Luke’s Contemporary Choir.
Filled with traditional favorites, the disc neatly summarizes this
group’s commission: to take the church’s familiar hymns and
recast them in a modern setting with instruments such as guitar, bass,
piano and drums. “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “It Came
Upon The Midnight Clear,” and the song “Rejoice Tonight,” written
by choir director David Lauria and adapted from the Gospel of John,
combine familiar lyrics with the sound of a Christian worship group.
Proceeds from the recording will be donated to St. Mary's
Assumption
Church
in
New Orleans
to help rebuild their pipe organ. St. Mary's, which is listed on
the National Historic Register and is the second-oldest church in
New Orleans
, sustained over $1.5 million in damage during Hurricane Katrina.

Nov
1, 2006 St. Luke’s Parish is looking for
more Ushers and Greeters who like to meet people and make friends while
serving the Lord and fellow parishioners. Ushers and Greeters improve our
warmth and hospitality by having someone at all entrances to the church,
at every Mass, to greet all who come to worship. In addition we will when
needed help parishioners find a seat, and assist in collecting the weekly
offering. This position is open to all, men women young and old. If you
feel this is for you please call the rectory to show your interest, or
talk to any of the greeters and ushers at the Mass you attend.We who are ushers and greeters would love to have you join us so as
to triple the current amount of people doing this now.
St.
Luke's School is collecting bottle
caps from Hood Milk in the Light Block bottles through Oct. 2007. The school will receive 5 cents for each cap redeemed. A
collection box is at the Church front entrance.

the first witness of Christ's resurrection. The article also
appeared in the Providence Visitor on May 4, 2006.

March 12-14 Fr. Ray
Collins met with New Testament Scholars in Rome.

2nd and 3rd from St. Luke's received special awards and had their

of the late Pope's death approaches, Fr. Glover's recollection of Pope John Paul II's legacy is described in the
