St. Luke's Men's Golf League

Introduction

The St. Luke's Men's Golf League is a friendly, informal group of senior golfers, although younger men are certainly welcome to join the league, if time and job permit.  The league meets on Tuesday mornings, during the season (April to November) at Pine Valley Country Club in Rehoboth, MA, as well as on Thursday mornings at various courses in both Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts.  The league was started in the late 1980's at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Barrington, Rhode Island.   Dues are $100 per year, which covers a banquet and prizes for the year-end tournament.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, golfers pay for their own green’s fees and carts.  There is an optional entry fee of $3 on Tuesdays, and $4 on Thursdays, for those members who want to participate in low net, nearest-to-the-pin, and other competitions.

Tuesday’s

On Tuesday’s, play is held at Pine Valley Country Club in Rehoboth.  Normal competition is an individual 18-hole low net score. The Tuesday sessions (for most of the season) begin with a 7:45 a.m. “cut off”.

There is a nearest-to-the-pin contest on all par three holes. There is an optional $3 entry fee for the low net competition and nearest-to-the-pin contest.  All the money collected on an individual Tuesday constitutes the amount of winnings available and distributed for that week.

Groupings (e.g., threesomes, foursomes) are formed on Monday via email sign-up, and then distributed to the players via email after 6 p.m. on the Monday prior to the competition.  Those players who did not sign-up but show up to play will be placed in groupings at the discretion of the starter.

Weekly results will be posted on this site.  Players choosing to compete for only play nine holes will have a 5% adjustment added to their score for the 18-hole low net competition.  Scores for Handicap Purposes will be the nine-hole score, which will be entered in the handicap program.

For those who prefer a later starting time, we suggest joining the group as we complete the front nine.  Simply let Mark Hubert (see Contacts below) know that you want to play the back nine with the group.  You should be ready to play by 9:45 a.m.

Please watch the pace of play.  Play “ready golf” meaning if it is safe to hit your shot, even though you are not "away”, please take your shot.  Remember the suggested time by the USGA to take a stroke is 40 seconds or less.

KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT OF  YOU!

Thursday’s

On Thursday's, play is held at various courses throughout Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts.  Normal competition is a team, multiple best ball, 18-hole score. Teams are made up based on combined total handicaps from those wishing to play. The group either meets at the Barrington Congregational (White) Church Park and Ride parking lot and carpools to the day’s venue, or players go on their own directly to the course.  Because we want starting times at the courses we play, it is requested that you indicate your desire to play no later than 12:00 p.m. (noon) on THE PRECEDING Thursday. A reminder notice will be sent out each Wednesday.  Please let Bill Hunt know if you intend to play (See Contacts below.)

Year-End Tournament

The league holds a year-end tournament on a Tuesday in October.  Foursomes are made up based on handicaps, and competition is held for low gross, low net, greenies, lowest number of putts, and team “skins” based on team net scores.  Players who cannot play on the day of the tournament are added to teams on a random basis and share in the team “skins” prize money.

Two trophies and a recognition plaque are associated with the year-end tournament:

  1. The Leonard Tobin Memorial Trophy is awarded to the player with the lowest net score for the tournament. The trophy has the names of the individual winners from 2010 to 2021.  The trophy is retained by the winner until the following year's tournament.
  2. The Low Gross Trophy is awarded to the player with the best individual score for the tournament.  The player’s name and year won appear on the trophy, which is retained by the winner until the following year's tournament.
  3. A plaque with the names of the Low Net Winners from 1998 to 2009 and the Low Gross Winners from 2012 to 2020 is mounted on the wall at the south entrance to the hall in the basement of the Church.
